New Brisbane production company Understudy Productions has announced it’s Brisbane Powerhouse debut with Boys of Sondheim created in collaboration with the LGBT community and Artistic Director Kris Stewart.

Boys of Sondheim is to be presented as part of MELT, the Brisbane Powerhouse’s annual festival that celebrates queer arts and culture. The festival commences on January 25 next year.

Boys of Sondheim is an intimate evening with the music of the greatest musical theatre composer, lyricist and eight time Tony and Grammy award winner, Stephen Sondheim. Set in a modern day apartment an all male cast will showcase some of his best work from Sondheim’s catalogue such as Company, Gypsy, Into the Woods, Follies, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, and Sweeney Todd. This production features five Brisbane artists who aim to shatter these scenes in order to expose the soulful, masculine underbelly of Sondheim’s work.

The musical direction will be under the batons of South-East Queensland Musical Directors, Brad Rush and Dominic Woodhead.

Producer Alex Woodward worked with Woodhead earlier in 2016 on the Understudy Productions premiere piece, Edges and could not look past bringing him on board as Co-Musical Director.

“Dominic is already establishing a reputation as one of Brisbane’s finest pianists and Musical Directors, and we can’t wait to see what he does with this incredible score and these fantastic performers,” Woodward said.

“Having Brad Rush on board is both exciting and inspiring. With such a respected name in South-East Queensland it will be fantastic for both the cast and audience to see the strong impact he will bring to this new piece.”

Boys of Sondheim will play from February 2 at The Brisbane Powerhouse. To book tickets head to
